THE countdown to the start of the amateur soccer season will officially begin this weekend as the top clubs from across the capital kick off the annual Tommy Clements Cup in the AUL Complex.
The best teams from the Athletic Union League and Leinster Senior League will compete against their counterparts from the United Churches League, Amateur League, Meath and District League and the Leinster Football League for the prestigious title.
Beginning on Sunday morning, the action lasts for two weeks as 16 clubs battle to progress from four groups of four and beyond the quarter and semi-final stages to reach the final on Sunday August 8th.
The invitational tournaments consistently attracts the top players in Dublin looking to hone their skills ahead of the new campaign and this year’s event promises to be as entertaining as ever.
Holders Ballymun United will kick off proceedings in Group A on Sunday morning when they take on Leinster Football League side Rialto, while the clash of Premier C champions Mellowes Beds and Leinster Senior League side Pheonix FC could potentially steal the opening-day show.
In Group B, the clash of Premier A champions Killester United and LSL giants Bangor Celtic is undoubtedly the match-up of the opening stages, but Joey Graydon’s men must see off Amateur League side Whiteleaf first, while Bangor face Rock Celtic of the MDL.
Sheriff YC have a fantastic pedigree in this tournament, winning back-to-back titles recently and will look for a good start against Amateur League side Rivermeade, while the meeting of the famous Wayside Celtic and Premier A new boys Whitehall Celtic is a mouth-watering one.
United Churches League side Sportslink are up first for Leinster Junior Cup runners up St Paul’s FC in Group D, while St Kevin’s Boys take on Leinster Football League side Galtee FC.
The group action continues with the second and third round of games on Tuesday and Thursday evening, before the tournament really heats up with the knock-out stages the following week.
